Villa Santa Cruz

Small, Intimate Wedding on Spectacular Supermoon Eve at Villa Santa Cruz

Tuesday, May 08, 2012
Congratulations to Sara & Tim who tied the knot on a gorgeous Cinco de Mayo night at Villa Santa Cruz, Boutique Hotel on the Beach, in Todos Santos, Baja Sur, Mexico.  With an intimate guest list of just immediate family and close friends, their wedding ceremony and celebration was personal yet understated with elegant details.

They stood beneath a rustic palo de arco wedding trellis draped in gauzy white curtains to exchange vows while the surf gently rolled in behind them.

After their officiant/best man, Nick, announced that they were husband and wife, a lively troop of mariachis serenaded the couple under the Palapa and then led the wedding party up to the Villa's Roof Terrace for cocktails and appetizers.

The Villa was beautifully decorated by Barb & Jan of Pueblo Magico Weddings, with green succulents, driftwood and bold proteas (the bride specially requested this flower).

The cupcake table - delicious german chocolate, carrot cake and coconut lime cupcakes prepared by caterer, Catherine Edwards.

After cocktails on the roof, everyone headed downstairs for a sunset champagne toast.

At sunset, the supermoon rose over the mountains...

...and the sunset glowed, turning the sky pink.

Sara & Tim stole a dance under the beautiful canopy of lights.

What an elegant wedding!  We are thrilled to continue to host Sara & Tim this week for their honeymoon.  We wish them the best in their new life together.

Villa Santa Cruz Showcased as Top 10 Desert Getaway by Outside Online

Tuesday, May 01, 2012
Villa Santa Cruz, Boutique Hotel on the Beach, is featured on as one of the Top Ten Desert Getaways in the world.  Coming in at #4, we are thrilled to represent Todos Santos, Baja Sur on a list that includes locations in the United States, Chile, Bolivia & Namibia.

The write-up in Outside Online highlights the eco-friendly nature of the Villa (solar electricity, organic vegetable garden) and wonderfully describes the guest experience at Villa Santa Cruz.  Here are a few of our favs:
  • It is an ideal spot for surfers with walk-off access to nearby breaks - right "out the front door and a five minute walk down the beach surfers can head to La Pastora, with its giant breaks and minimal crowds."
  • It also highlights the amazing whale watching opportunities from the Villa - "Later in the season - from November to April - guests can watch migrating humpback whales from the rooftop terrace."

Neil Patrick Harris Officiates Wedding at Villa Santa Cruz in Todos Santos

Monday, April 30, 2012

Villa Santa Cruz, Boutique Hotel on the Beach in Todos Santos, Baja Sur, Mexico was proud to have hosted the beautiful wedding of Emma Bates & Joshua Zar on Saturday, April 28, 2012, with celebrity officiant Neil Patrick Harris.  NPH shared his love of Villa Santa Cruz by sending out this tweet to his 3.2 million Twitter followers:

@ActuallyNPH - And here's a view from the rooftop of the Villa where the wedding was held.  Thanks Matt & Jessica!

Check out the lovely write-up and photos on the infamous, Pink is the New Blog, in which blogger Trent Vanegas describes the Villa as "one of the most beautiful estates I've ever had the pleasure of experiencing."  Don't forget to visit his follow up blog post that has another great photo of the newlyweds with NPH.

Here are more details and photos of the beautiful wedding:

Under a canopy of papel picado streamers and a bamboo chuppah decorated with flowing white fabric, the couple exchanged vows while their friends and family cheered them on.

After NPH declared that Emma & Josh were now husband and wife, mariachis poured on to the balconies overlooking the back lawn and congratulated the couple with lively Mexican music.

The couple headed inside for another kiss...

The guests then found their way up to the Roof Terrace and out to the Pool for delicious cocktails and appetizers.

The weather turned a little cool, so the party moved inside for dinner and toasts.  The beautiful candles around the fountain, gas lamps, and calla lily centerpieces made for a warm and cozy evening.

After dinner, the party moved outside under a canopy of lights to dance the night away.  The evening was capped off with the release of Chinese Wish Lanterns from the Villa's Beach.  We wish Emma & Josh the best in their new life together!

US State Department Recognizes Safety of Baja Sur - Finally!

Thursday, March 15, 2012

The US State Department has finally recognized what we have known for a long time - that Todos Santos is one of the safest regions in North America.  When you visit Villa Santa Cruz, Todos Santos Hotel on the Beach, you will relish the privacy and seclusion of the Villa, enjoy the natural beauty of the ocean and leave your cares the moment you walk through our grand front entryway.  Although the State Department may be late with its recognition of the safety of the area, we are so glad it is finally sending the right message about Baja Sur!

US State Department Recognizes Safety of La Paz and South Baja

For the First Time, New Travel Notices for Mexico Specifically Separate La Paz and Other Regions, Confirming It as One of the Safest Cities in North America
La Paz

La Paz

LA PAZ, Baja California Sur, Mexico– In a significant move that recognizes the safety of La Paz and Baja California Sur, the U.S. State Department’s latest 2012 travel update states no security concerns for the region. For the first time, the regular update includes “no advisory” in effect for La Paz and the entire South Baja region. The move reaffirms the reputation of La Paz as the city of peace and abundance on the Sea of Cortez, and one of the safest places in the world to live in and visit.

“We applaud the U.S. State Department for recognizing what every visitor to La Paz experiences here: That it is a beautiful, peaceful city, and – along with the entire South Baja region – it is an entirely secure and rewarding place for vacations, for owning a second home, or for retirement,” said Agustin Olachea, President of La Paz Tourism Board, and spokesperson for the La Paz Developers Tourism Council. “Travelers can feel confident coming here, knowing that the peace that one quietly encounters in La Paz extends directly from the abundant ocean life and cultural richness that sets La Paz apart from any place on the planet.”

The report marks the first time that the State Department has broken down its Mexico travel update into specific populated areas and regions. According to an unnamed State Department source, the “granularized” report was compiled at the request of American business groups interested in employee security. It was not done to appease various boosters of Mexican tourism. Previous to this report, the US State Department’s Bureau of Consular Affairs issued travel warnings to larger, more general areas for Americans visiting Mexico. The result was confusion, with some tourists curtailing plans for visiting Mexico in spite of huge areas of the country unaffected by recent drug-related violence.

The safety of Baja Sur in particular was also underscored by the presence of U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and other international leaders at last month’s G20 Foreign Ministers Summit in Los Cabos.

Todos Santos Artist Studio Tour

Wednesday, February 15, 2012

Our pueblo of Todos Santos, a bohemian artist community, was in true form on Sunday, February 12 when over 30 local artists opened their studio doors and welcomed in the public for the 3rd Annual Artists’ Open Studio Tour.  From Villa Santa Cruz, Todos Santos Hotel, we headed into town and started the tour at the neighborhood café, Cafelix, to receive our self-guided tour map and official red wristband.  We also browsed Cafelix’s Visions Gallery which had on display one work from each artist on the Studio Tour.  As novice art enthusiasts (notice the emphasis!), we set out on the tour, looking forward to chatting with the artists and learning about their craft.

We headed up the main drag and stopped in at the Galeria de Todos Santos to visit with artists Michael Cope and Erick Ochoa.  Their studio, an outdoor garden space draped in weather-resistant tarps, let in natural sunlight and a soft breeze while beautifully exhibiting their large oil works.  (They also have an Asian inspired restaurant, Michael's at the Gallery, on Friday & Saturday nights).

We then stopped at Diane Knight’s Purple Door Studio and enjoyed her work – lovely paintings inspired by life in Mexico.

At Tori Sepulveda’s studio, we were hypnotized by her paintings of strong women and horses.

Next door, we visited with Nanette Hayles and ogled her vibrant mosaics and discussed her emotionally charged pieces that depict the assassinations of John F. Kennedy and Bobby Kennedy.

Jill Logan’s lovely garden studio displayed her colorful and sensual landscapes, broken tile murals and bold abstracts.

As we headed back towards La Pastora Beach to Villa Santa Cruz, we stopped at the Studio of Gloria Santoyo Ruenitz.  She explained how she combines encaustic,  found objects and photography into her works.

Our last stop was to see Jan Marie Sessler, whose serene abstracts featuring ocean colors and found materials were calming.

We were proud to have supported the artist community of Todos Santos during the Studio Tour.  We are continually impressed by the ingenuity and beauty in the works they create.  Our sincere thanks to the artists for sharing your spaces with us!

Yacht Charter in La Paz with - Beauty in our Backyard

Friday, January 13, 2012

Thanks to our friends at - a comprehensive online source of first-hand travel advice on Baja California, Mexico - we spent the day aboard a spectacular yacht in the Sea of Cortez, explored the beautiful Balandra Beach and swam with whale sharks.  While our guests at Villa Santa Cruz, Boutique Hotel on the Beach, are usually quite content enjoying the Villa and Todos Santos, this day trip to La Paz is a "must do" for any guest of Villa Santa Cruz and any traveler to Baja Sur.

The Samurai - what a beauty!

Arriving bright and early to the La Paz marina after an hour drive from Todos Santos, we were welcomed by Kenny Busick, the owner and captain of our vessel for the day, The One Baja's 56' Samurai Luxury Yacht.  Over piping hot coffee and breakfast on board, we met up with the team and other Baja "ambassadors" with whom we would spend the day.  The impressive list of locals included Tim Means, a passionate Baja conservationist and owner of the outdoor adventure company, Baja Expeditions, Roy Stock - Principal of Wide Open Baja, an off road touring company, James Curtis - Owner of the Cortez Club, the best diving and watersports center in La Paz, who regaled us with amazing tales of personal encounters with whales and dolphins in the Sea of Cortez, and Restaurateurs Miguel Ochoa (Hotel Casa Tota and La Santena Restaurant & Bar), Geoffrey Lujan (Las Tres Virgines Restaurant in La Paz) and Rafael Rodriguez (Salsipuedes Bar & Restaurant in La Paz) and more!

Once we settled in on the yacht, we were soon heading north through the La Paz Bay.  With the morning sun on our shoulders, it was a beautiful sight watching the coast from the sea.  Within minutes, the crew on the top deck spotted a friendly whale shark near our boat.  Jim Pickell, the CEO of, was the only one brave enough to jump in and get up close and personal with him.

We made our way to Balandra Beach, one of the most breath taking stretches in all of Baja Sur.  With crystal clear water, powder white sand and gently lapping waves, an afternoon here is one spent in paradise.  Captain Kenny anchored the boat in the bay and let us explore.

Docking back at the Marina, we were sad to say good-bye to all our new friends and to such a great day out on the water.  We'd like to extend a huge thank you to everyone at for such a fun day.  We look forward to sending our Villa Santa Cruz guests out for the same adventure!

Food & Wine Pairing Event Wildly Successful - Benefited Todos Santos Orphanage

Thursday, December 22, 2011
On Monday evening, December 19, Villa Santa Cruz, Boutique Hotel on the Beach, hosted a lovely Food & Wine Pairing Event to benefit the Hogar del Nino, the orphanage in Todos Santos. From the sales of dinner tickets, silent auction items, raffle tickets and individual donations, the evening raised an astounding $7,000 USD that will be put to great use at the Hogar. We are grateful for the efforts of dedicated event coordinators, Nancy Naigle, Nancy Serfas, and Lisa Welsch, who put together such an elegant and successful evening.

Seventy guests arrived at 5:30pm and were welcomed with fresh sangria and bruschetta, lovingly donated by Chef Sergio of La Casita Tapas & Wine Bar, who also catered the dinner. Serenaded by the sweet voice of Tracy Durland, guests mingled on the back patio while bidding on silent auction items and watching the sunset.

After dark, it was time for dinner. Chef Sergio prepared an exquisite five course menu that was enhanced by the wine pairings selected by Mac Sutton of La Bodega de Todos Santos. Here’s a look at the delicious menu:

Salad of Organic Greens, Roquefort Cheese, Pears, Walnuts and Mandarin Vinaigrette
20120 LA Cetto Sierra Blanca Sauvignon Blanc

Shrimp with Tricolor Pasta and Jalapeno Cream Sauce
2009 Vinas Pyoan Paulina (46% Merlot, 46% Zinfandel, 8% Petit Syrah)

Chicken Skewers with Peanut Sauce
2010 La Bodega de Todos Santos Prologo (80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Petit Syrah)

Prime Ribeye with Red Wine Shallot Sauce
2009 Calixa (80% Cabernet, 20% Syrah)

Chocolate Mousse Cake with Passion Fruit and Berry Sauces
Santo Tomas Tipo Oporto

Throughout the meal, guests learned about the activities and needs of the Hogar. The directors of the orphanage, Joel & Alicia Hernandez, gave a heartfelt thanks to everyone in attendance and to the event coordinators and volunteers who work diligently to ensure that the Hogar has what it needs to care for its 20 children. Lisa Welsch, who founded the Lunch program at the Hogar, explained that she organizes volunteers to cook weekly meals for the children. Nancy Serfas encouraged everyone to visit to sign up to make automatic monthly donations to the Hogar to ensure its basic necessities are met.

We were honored to host such a loving evening that benefited a charity that deserves so much. We look forward to next year!
