Upcoming Events in Todos Santos - 2012 to 2013 Season

Monday, July 30, 2012

Summertime is upon us in Baja Sur. With hot long days, occasional afternoon thunder storms and beautiful red sunsets, our Villa Santa Cruz guests are falling into the slow pace of the Todos Santos summer. Sipping cold drinks in the ocean front hammocks, taking evening beach strolls with the dogs and dipping in the pool to refresh and revive, they have become part of the calm and peacefulness that the summer brings us.

Even as we enjoy the unhurried groove of the summer season, we look forward to the events that are already being planned for the coming year. As you start to plan your getaways for 2012-2013, consider the following festivals and celebrations that will make your stay in Todos even more memorable.

October 12 to 16, 2012 - Festival of the Patron Saint of Todos Santos, Nuestra Señora del Pilar

This lively festival commemorates the founding of Todos Santos.  With music, arts, dancing, a parade and horse show, these will be five days filled with celebration and cheer.

January 10 to 26, 2013 - 2nd Annual Todos Santos Music Festival, Organized by Peter Buck of REM

The debut of this 3 week music festival last season was incredible!  With three weeks of live music, big names (Robin Hitchcock, Chuck Prophet, Kevn Kinney & more) and great venues, it is absolutely a "must do" in Todos Santos.  Performances every Thurs, Fri & Sat nights for three consecutive weekends (Jan 10 - 12; Jan 17-19; Jan 24-26).  This is definitely the hottest ticket in town and rooms are going quickly - limited availability remains at Villa Santa Cruz during the first weekend only.  Contact us now to make your reservation.

February 2 to 9, 2013 - Todos Santos Art Festival

This week long celebration of the arts offers many cultural events - includes art exhibitions, dance and music performances.  Official program to come.

February 10, 2013 - 4th Annual Todos Santos Artist Open Studio Tour

On the heels of the Art Festival, over 30 of our local Todos Santos artists will open their studios and invite in the general public to view their work spaces and chat about their creative practices. You will pick up a map of the studios and take a self-guided tour throughout the town, stopping in to see the artists who most intrigue you.

Shown: Todos Santos Artist Tori Sepulveda

February 21 to February 28 - 10th Annual Todos Santos Film Festival

Selected films from across Mexico and Latin America are shown at the beautifully restored Manuel Márquez de León Theater, located in the heart of the historic district of Todos Santos.  Before the films begin, have dinner in town and stroll the main plaza where you'll find local vendors selling wine by the glass and sweet treats to take into the theater with you.  So charming!

This is such a promising line up of festivals and events - the 2012 to 2013 season will be here before we know it!

Todos Santos Artist Studio Tour

Wednesday, February 15, 2012

Our pueblo of Todos Santos, a bohemian artist community, was in true form on Sunday, February 12 when over 30 local artists opened their studio doors and welcomed in the public for the 3rd Annual Artists’ Open Studio Tour.  From Villa Santa Cruz, Todos Santos Hotel, we headed into town and started the tour at the neighborhood café, Cafelix, to receive our self-guided tour map and official red wristband.  We also browsed Cafelix’s Visions Gallery which had on display one work from each artist on the Studio Tour.  As novice art enthusiasts (notice the emphasis!), we set out on the tour, looking forward to chatting with the artists and learning about their craft.

We headed up the main drag and stopped in at the Galeria de Todos Santos to visit with artists Michael Cope and Erick Ochoa.  Their studio, an outdoor garden space draped in weather-resistant tarps, let in natural sunlight and a soft breeze while beautifully exhibiting their large oil works.  (They also have an Asian inspired restaurant, Michael's at the Gallery, on Friday & Saturday nights).

We then stopped at Diane Knight’s Purple Door Studio and enjoyed her work – lovely paintings inspired by life in Mexico.

At Tori Sepulveda’s studio, we were hypnotized by her paintings of strong women and horses.

Next door, we visited with Nanette Hayles and ogled her vibrant mosaics and discussed her emotionally charged pieces that depict the assassinations of John F. Kennedy and Bobby Kennedy.

Jill Logan’s lovely garden studio displayed her colorful and sensual landscapes, broken tile murals and bold abstracts.

As we headed back towards La Pastora Beach to Villa Santa Cruz, we stopped at the Studio of Gloria Santoyo Ruenitz.  She explained how she combines encaustic,  found objects and photography into her works.

Our last stop was to see Jan Marie Sessler, whose serene abstracts featuring ocean colors and found materials were calming.

We were proud to have supported the artist community of Todos Santos during the Studio Tour.  We are continually impressed by the ingenuity and beauty in the works they create.  Our sincere thanks to the artists for sharing your spaces with us!

Food & Wine Pairing Event Wildly Successful - Benefited Todos Santos Orphanage

Thursday, December 22, 2011
On Monday evening, December 19, Villa Santa Cruz, Boutique Hotel on the Beach, hosted a lovely Food & Wine Pairing Event to benefit the Hogar del Nino, the orphanage in Todos Santos. From the sales of dinner tickets, silent auction items, raffle tickets and individual donations, the evening raised an astounding $7,000 USD that will be put to great use at the Hogar. We are grateful for the efforts of dedicated event coordinators, Nancy Naigle, Nancy Serfas, and Lisa Welsch, who put together such an elegant and successful evening.

Seventy guests arrived at 5:30pm and were welcomed with fresh sangria and bruschetta, lovingly donated by Chef Sergio of La Casita Tapas & Wine Bar, who also catered the dinner. Serenaded by the sweet voice of Tracy Durland, guests mingled on the back patio while bidding on silent auction items and watching the sunset.

After dark, it was time for dinner. Chef Sergio prepared an exquisite five course menu that was enhanced by the wine pairings selected by Mac Sutton of La Bodega de Todos Santos. Here’s a look at the delicious menu:

Salad of Organic Greens, Roquefort Cheese, Pears, Walnuts and Mandarin Vinaigrette
20120 LA Cetto Sierra Blanca Sauvignon Blanc

Shrimp with Tricolor Pasta and Jalapeno Cream Sauce
2009 Vinas Pyoan Paulina (46% Merlot, 46% Zinfandel, 8% Petit Syrah)

Chicken Skewers with Peanut Sauce
2010 La Bodega de Todos Santos Prologo (80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Petit Syrah)

Prime Ribeye with Red Wine Shallot Sauce
2009 Calixa (80% Cabernet, 20% Syrah)

Chocolate Mousse Cake with Passion Fruit and Berry Sauces
Santo Tomas Tipo Oporto

Throughout the meal, guests learned about the activities and needs of the Hogar. The directors of the orphanage, Joel & Alicia Hernandez, gave a heartfelt thanks to everyone in attendance and to the event coordinators and volunteers who work diligently to ensure that the Hogar has what it needs to care for its 20 children. Lisa Welsch, who founded the Lunch program at the Hogar, explained that she organizes volunteers to cook weekly meals for the children. Nancy Serfas encouraged everyone to visit to sign up to make automatic monthly donations to the Hogar to ensure its basic necessities are met.

We were honored to host such a loving evening that benefited a charity that deserves so much. We look forward to next year!

Day of the Dead v. Halloween - Friends or Foes?

Sunday, October 30, 2011
El Dia de los Muertos, or the Day of the Dead, is a national holiday in Mexico that is, ironically, full of life, color and energy. The belief is that the spirits of the deceased return once a year to spend time with their families. And so, between October 31 and November 2, Mexican families visit cemeteries, decorate the graves of their loved ones, and rejoice in the reunion of their families – the past with the present. With delicious food and lively music, the Day of the Dead is actually a celebration of life.

In the town of Todos Santos, with a healthy mix of both Mexicans and Gringos, the juxtaposition of the celebrations of American Halloween and Mexican Day of the Dead are a bit peculiar at first glance. The two holidays are based on completely opposite ideas of death – Halloween stems from an innate fear of ghosts and spirits while the Day of the Dead is a joyous time to reunite with deceased friends and family members. However, as the centuries have ticked by, and Halloween has morphed from a superstitious terror-invoking event into a secular, community-oriented festivity, the spirit of the two holidays now seem to complement each other.

Here in Todos Santos, Halloween and Day of the Dead revelry are in full force. The Sandbar hosted a wild Halloween party on Friday night, followed by the traditional costume extravaganza at the Hotel California on Saturday night. And, the streets and storefronts in Todos Santos are festively decorated for the Day of the Dead. The traditional Mexican Catrina, the well-dressed skeleton figurine seen all over Mexico, has made a grand appearance at La Garra Bar, the Cultural Center is decorated with a Day of the Dead altar, and a skeleton has even saddled up to the bar at Cafelix. At Villa Santa Cruz, the beautiful talavera urn that adorns our staircase reminds us of this lively holiday year-round. What a time to be in Todos Santos!

Viva Mexico! Mexican Independence Day Celebrated in Todos Santos

Saturday, September 17, 2011

We are lucky in Todos Santos to have many festivals, parades, and events throughout the year, but, without doubt, the biggest night of them all celebrates the Día de Independencia - Mexican Independence Day.

While the actual Independence Day is September 16, the celebration begins the night before with a grand party in the main plaza.  The Mission is dressed up in a light show, food stands made of palm fronds appear so you can feast on authentic and delicious churros, tamales, and pozole (just to name a few), you can play Mexican Bingo, vote for the queen of Todos Santos, and watch the dance and music troops performing on stage.

The night culminates around 11pm with the infamous El Grito - literally "the yell."  The yell is a call-and-response between the speaker and the audience, mimicking the yell from Hidalgo in 1810, encouraging the people to revolt against the Spanish colonial government.

In Todos Santos, this year's yell was led by Esthela Ponce, the Presidenta Municipal de La Paz (akin to the Mayor).  She yelled and we spiritedly responded:

"Viva Hidalgo!

Viva Morelos!

Viva el Pueblo Mágico de Todos Santos!

Viva Mexico!

Yes indeed, Viva Mexico!

Downward Dog, Anyone?

Thursday, July 21, 2011

Villa Santa Cruz, Boutique Hotel on the Beach, was the ideal setting for 20 yogis from San Diego to take a deep breath and find their inner calm. From July 16 – 20, the Villa was the main headquarters for a Yoga Retreat organized by Asana in Paradise. The Retreat’s yoga instructor, Roxanne DePalma, led morning and night classes on the Villa’s Roof Terrace and at the Pool. Combined with a week of warm weather and delicious meals prepared by Todos Santos local Dominique Sawyer, the Yoga Retreat was a huge success!

Yoga photographers, Todd LeVeck and Micaela Malmi of Epic PhotoJournalism, were on site capturing the experience. Click here to see their complete photo album of the Yoga Retreat on Facebook. Additionally, you can read Micaela’s Blog Post about the Retreat here.  We love the sentiment captured in these lines from her Blog, "Lunch is followed by another yoga class by the poolside where our yoga teacher reminds us that we should really feel the surfaces beneath our feet - the grass, the sand, the ocean.  It is a beautiful reminder to just stop and observe. And to take time to feel."

Salute to the Summer Solstice

Tuesday, June 21, 2011

With clear skies, a warm breeze and a peacefulness that only summer can bring, this is the kind of day that you wish would last forever - and, since today is the Summer Solstice, it almost does just that.  On this longest day of the year, we have 13 hours and 32 minutes of daylight in Todos Santos.  At Villa Santa Cruz, the sun won’t set until 8:10pm, leaving an impressive amount of daylight hours to get in a game of beach bocce ball, nap in the hammocks, take a dip in the pool and have a margarita…or two!  Here are some pictures of this gorgeous first day of summer – enjoy!

Sandra Sutphen commented on 21-Jun-2011 08:07 PM
Just beautiful, Jessica! You and Matt (and John) must be so proud of your wonderful space. Solstice is a little longer here in Orange County (14.5 hours) and finally, we're getting some warm weather. But I miss Todos Santos. See you in October. Sandra
